A development of settlement structures from the end of 6th and beginning of 7th century to the mid-10th century is documented in the Bohemian-Moravian borderland. We use archaeological materials from the old collections (e.g. Maˇrín) and also material amassed from intensive surface collections of the last 3 to 4 years. We have identified only two or three sites full description

We use archaeological materials from the old collections (e.g. Maˇrín) and also material amassed from intensive surface collections of the last 3 to 4 years. We have identified only two or three sites with Prague type pottery - i.e. from the first phase (6/7-7th cent.) of Slavic settlement. They are JevíˇckoPˇredmˇestí 3 and Knínice 6. We have discovered 3-5 settlement areas from the 8th century and 15 sites from the Middle Hill-fort Period (9th-1. half of 10th century). The new hill-forts were established during the 9th century. Most important was Maˇrín hill-fort with an area of approximately 20ha. Armoury items were also found at this site: an axe and two spearheads/lances. The spur and axe were found nearby (Kˇrenov). A find of 6 iron sickles and a knife in Knínice was probably a hoard. It also dates to the 9th century. Rhombic iron arrowheads were found in the hillfort Biskupice-Nectava and they could be interpreted as an indicator of association with the old Hungarians during the 10th century. Two iron strape-ends which can be dated to the 9th century are also known from this site. Burial sites have not been discovered in this region as yet; our knowledge of this region is still inadequate. This region has played an important role in the early Middle Ages as it controlled, probably with the help of Maˇrín hill-fort, a long distance route connecting Moravia with Bohemia.  |9 eng
